  Korea Utara, secara resmi dikenal dengan nama Republik Demokratik Rakyat Korea (RDRK), didirikan pada tanggal 9 September 1948. Pendiri dan pemimpin pertama negara ini adalah Kim Il-sung. Sebagai latar belakang sejarah, perlu diketahui bahwa pada tahun 1910, Jepang menjajah Semenanjung Korea dan memerintah hingga akhir Perang Dunia II pada tahun 1945. Setelah Jepang menyerah, Amerika Serikat dan Uni Soviet mengambil alih wilayah tersebut.
